Springerle – a traditional pastry
Springerle are a type of decorated cookie, particularly popular in southern Germany during Advent and Christmas, with historical roots stretching back to the Middle Ages. They were traditionally baked for a variety of occasions and customs. Often, these beautiful, pure white cookies were given as precious gifts or offerings.
A precious gift
Springerle & Mold This also explains the diverse images and symbolic motifs depicted on the Springerle. Each era leaves its cultural and historical mark on the pastry, and the mold makers or bakers use the image to communicate with the Springerle connoisseur.
Due to its expensive ingredients, Springerle was reserved in the Middle Ages only for very distinguished and wealthy families, especially the nobility and high-ranking church dignitaries. It was only with the industrial mass production of sugar from the mid-19th century onwards that it became more affordable and could be bought and used by a broader segment of the population.
